Baby Yoga has lots of amazing benefits for your Baby, but what exactly is it and how does it aid my Baby's development?
There are so many forms of yoga, Viyasa, Bikram Iyengar and more. Baby Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga refers to physical exercises and sequences of asanas(posture), which is designed to align your muscles and bones and to open the many channels of the body, especially the spine so that energy can flow freely. Hatha is a slow-paced and gentle form of yoga. The yoga poses help to strengthen muscles by providing gentle exercise. Baby Yoga helps to relax over-contracted muscles and allows the body to return/maintain its optimum posture and position. The focus of Baby Yoga is on
the voluntary muscles which aids your baby's conscious movements.
Baby Yoga can help your baby's development in many different ways.
1. Baby Yoga can aid your baby's digestive system.
The baby's digestive system is very immature at birth. Baby Yoga has been found effective at stimulating the colon and aiding digestion and the excretion of waste products. Hip stretches can be useful in helping to reduce colic and wind as it helps to release wind and move stool through the bowel.
2. Baby Yoga can aid the development of your baby's muscles.
Your baby's muscle fibers are virtually all present at birth however, these aren't fully developed yet. They will strengthen and thicken when the baby becomes more active and puts on weight. Massaging your baby improves the oxygen flow which eases the muscles and joints while yoga poses help to strengthen muscles by providing gentle exercise.
3. Baby Yoga can stimulate the lymphatic system.
Yoga stretches can help to boost the lymphatic drainage by massaging internal organs and detoxing tissues while practicing yoga stretches and poses.
4.Baby Yoga supports the development of the Vestibular system.
The vestibular system is our body's sense of balance and helps us to counter gravity, balance and control eye movements. This is crucial in the overall co-ordination of the nervous system and is needed to allow the brain to interpret sensory information it receives. Baby Yoga helps the development of the vestibular system by movement, drops, swings and dance. The different holds and the variations of speed in movement is also a great way to develop the vestibular system as the babies can distinguish the different speeds they are going in.
5. Baby Yoga supports the development of the Proprioceptive system.
The proprioceptive system is our body's sense of awareness of the position of the body and the movement of the arms and legs. It tells us where our body parts are and what they are doing without us having to look at them. Proprioceptive rich activities can have a positive effect on your child's behaviour, focus and every day activities. Babies are born completely unaware of the fact that they have arms and legs or any other body part. By moving your baby’s body in a controlled way and using the exercises in baby yoga and positive touch(for example through massage), your baby will become more aware of movement, the position of its body and the different body parts.
I hope you've enjoyed this blog and learned that is Baby Yoga we don't just move your baby's legs or arms. There is a reason why we do every movement. Your teacher should explain to you every movement and it's benefits.
